Nonetheless, for busy small animal vet practices it can be difficult to find species-specific advice to support clinical teams to review best practice or to provide focused guidance for younger vets dealing with a variety of bacterial infection presentations in a clinical setting for the first time.

This four-part series covers key topics to review best practice:

• • Stewardship: Making an impact on the three Rs (Reduce / Replace / Refine) and key steps for good stewardship including using clinical signs and cytology to identify a bacterial infection.

• • Managing Clients: As effective antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) needs to involve pet owners and improving compliance if antibiotics are used as part of a treatment plan.

• • Diagnosis: It is essential to diagnose bacterial infections to avoid unnecessary ‘just in case’ treatment. This section reviews interpreting bacterial culture and antimicrobial sensitivity testing.

• • Antibiotic choice: If antimicrobial treatment is needed, reviewing the tiers, pharmacokinetics and other factors that are important in selecting the right antibiotic in each case.
