The BSAVA has today (21 May) announced Ian Ramsey as its president for 2020-21.
Prof Ramsey has taken over the role from Sue Paterson. The handover would have taken place during BSAVA Congress, but it was delayed when COVID-19 forced the cancellation of Europe’s largest small animal veterinary event.
One of his key presidential tasks will be to oversee the congress’ move north from long-time base Birmingham to Manchester in March.
Prof Ramsey is probably best known as editor of four editions of the BSAVA Small Animal Formulary, and has served the BSAVA as regional secretary, committee member, and chairman of Petsavers and the scientific committee.
He has been at the University of Glasgow since 1998 and its professor of small animal medicine since 2009, publishing in the fields of infectious diseases, endocrinology and neurology.
On becoming president, Prof Ramsey said: “At this time of great uncertainty in the profession, my focus will be on providing BSAVA members with the scientific information and clinical training they need, in a suitable form.
“Clinical skills and science lie at the heart of being a good vet and BSAVA members get access to a huge range of cheap or free resources in these areas to help them in their careers.
“Congress 2021 will be evolving as a vital part of this effort and I am looking forward to welcoming everyone to Manchester during the last week of March 2021.”
Dr Paterson wished her successor well in his presidential year. She said: “I rest assured that I am leaving the association in the very capable hands of Ian, and I am looking forward to celebrating with him and the rest of the small animal community at our congress in Manchester next year, when hopefully life will have returned to some degree of normality.”
