Lacuna Diagnostics, VetCPD and clinical pathologist Francesco Cian team up to provide online course that uses digital cytology cases to provide similar experience to real microscope.
Technology that has helped reduce diagnostic times from days to hours is being used to help deliver the first online digital cytology CPD course this month.
Whole slide imaging (WSI) – a digital imaging innovation introduced by cytology specialist Lacuna Diagnostics – uses computerised technology to scan and convert cytology and haematology glass slides into digital images.
The process can be performed in-house by vets, then the slides are viewed and reported on remotely by pathologists.
Now the WSI technology is also being applied to teaching, with a selection of real digital cytology cases to be incorporated for the first time into an online CPD course.
VetCPD has collaborated with Lacuna to offer digital cases within the course of 10 modules, which is suitable for vets and VNs, and available from 11 May.
The course will be tutored by Francesco Cian (pictured), a veterinary clinical pathologist who works for Batt Laboratories, and has lectured extensively nationally and internationally. He also writes a monthly article for Vet Times.
The digital slides provide participants with a similar experience to a real microscope, but delegates are only required to have a computer and internet connection.
Participants will be sent links to a few digital cases to look at and attempt a diagnosis, with these followed by a video tutorial where the smear is described and a diagnosis given.
Full details of the course are available from the VetCPD website.
