First graduates say pharmacy manager course is improving standards

Nicola Crooks RVN

First graduates of SQP regulator Vetpol’s veterinary pharmacy manager course have said their new-found knowledge had helped them manage their practices more effectively.

The level four online CPD course provides progression for qualified SQPs and veterinary professionals keen to take their training in pharmacy management to the next stage.

Key areas

The course is suitable for SQPs who want to manage a veterinary pharmacy in a registered premises or for other vet professionals involved in the management of a pharmacy.

It focuses on the following seven modules and a multiple choice question exam that leads to a certificate:

  • veterinary medicines
  • sourcing veterinary medicines
  • stock control and storage
  • dispensing veterinary medicines
  • safe handling of veterinary medicines
  • monitoring use of veterinary medicines
  • communication

‘Beneficial’

Nicola Crooks RVN – of Marple Veterinary Centre, who recently passed the course – said: “I have found this course so beneficial, and will be giving a lot of feedback to the practice I currently work in with regards to how the pharmacy is run and how we can improve it.”

She added: “This is a lovely course to study; the way it is set out with bullet points and pictures to break up all the text really helps to keep me engaged. I would recommend other RVNs to do this, even if pharmacy isn’t really of interest. It’s really opened up my eyes to keep updated and not do things the way they have always been done.”

Demanding

Caroline Johnson of Vetpol said pharmacy management was an increasingly demanding area of veterinary practice. She said: “Legislation, sustainability, resistance, misuse of medication and compliance are all very important issues right now, and the practice pharmacy can play an increasingly important role in all of those areas.

“Ensuring there are robust processes helps to protect the pet, the client and the practice. We are thrilled that the course is providing our students with a great experience and even more pleased that what they learn is being put into action for the benefit of all.”

Full details of the course are online.
